The 15 states below cover approximately 80% of counseling students in the US. Requirements shown are for postgraduate LPC/LMHC/LMFT licensure — your program's internal practicum and internship requirements may differ.

What Counts as a Supervision Hour?
Not all time with your supervisor counts equally. Here's what qualifies:
Individual Supervision
One-on-one sessions with your licensed supervisor. This is the gold standard — it counts 1:1 and typically makes up the majority of required supervision hours. No cap in most states.
Triadic Supervision
You, one peer supervisee, and one supervisor. Counts as individual supervision under CACREP standards. Most state boards treat it the same as individual.
Group Supervision
Up to 6–8 supervisees with one supervisor. Counts toward hours, but most states cap how many group hours can replace individual — often 50% or less. CACREP requires 1.5 hours/week of group during internship.
What Does NOT Count
- Informal consultation ("hey, quick question about my client…")
- Case staffing without a licensed supervisor present
- Asynchronous written feedback (after July 1, 2026 under CACREP standards)
- Peer supervision without a licensed supervisor
CACREP Practicum vs. Internship Requirements
These are program completion requirements — separate from your state board's postgraduate requirements.
Practicum (100 hours minimum)
- 40 hours of direct client contact
- 1 hour of individual or triadic supervision per week
- 1.5 hours of group supervision per week (program-provided)
Internship (600 hours minimum)
- 240 hours of direct client contact
- 1 hour of individual or triadic supervision per week
- 1.5 hours of group supervision per week
Total CACREP minimum: 700 clinical hours (100 practicum + 600 internship), with at least 280 being direct client contact.
How to Track Supervision Hours Accurately
Most students underestimate how much documentation their state board will require at licensure. Start tracking from day one with these fields:
- Date of each supervision session
- Supervisor's name and license number
- Supervision type (individual / triadic / group)
- Format (in-person or synchronous video — required post–July 2026)
- Duration in hours and minutes
- Topics covered (brief note)
- Supervisor signature or verified timestamp
